My name is Nkululeko Khumalo, I am a young designer who has always been passionate about sewing. Yebozululand gave me an opportunity to infiltrate this business through their sewing program offered to people in rural communities. I learnt sewing and extended my services to upcoming designers and also used it as means of achieving financial gain.
I was offered an opportunity to be part of the internship program of the African German Youth Office. I was provided with living allowance, food costs, a plain ticket was bought for me, they supported me in the process of applying for all the necessary documents required when flying abroad.
I was proud to finally land in Berlin which is such a breathtaking place. It is totally different from South Africa. I grew up in a rural area in KwaZulu Natal which is faced by issues of having limited access to resources and services. Berlin gave me a totally new experience of gaining access to everything. People were very friendly and welcoming to me. This includes Paula and Jana whom we developed friendship with. They believed in me and were extremely supportive. I was exposed to a place that had so much opportunities which was an honor to me.
I got an opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge of fashion. This will definitely improve chances of me succeeding in this field. I was introduced to the operational aspects of fashion which includes marketing strategies, stocktaking, printing out prices, brand management and creating collections. I was in a productive work environment where I got a chance to also share my knowledge in fashion. I was listened to and felt recognized. The Workshop held was also very informative and beneficial for us. I was also introduced to more ways of making money.
I was happy to be part of this experience that awarded me with international work experience, networking opportunities, personal growth, cultural experience and resume enhancement. I’m truly grateful.
